On-Farm Learning

Bloomfield Farm is a teaching farm

We are witnessing a dramatic change in farming in Vermont.  Many more people, especially younger people from a non-farming background, are committing themselves to learning how to farm.  We're inspired by the energy and enthusiasm we have seen, and we hope to provide an opportunity to learn a way of farming relevant to a new group of farmers.

Qualities of our farming method:

requires less land, under an acre

requires less capital investment

is organically-based and low-impact

reduces inputs

relies on human power primarily

is market-driven to support a household income

For 2010, we will be offering several opportunities to learn at Bloomfield Farm.

Apprenticeships:  Please visit the NOFA-VT Apprenticeship Information for details on our farm and other opportunities throughout Vermont.

Academic program with the University of Vermont:  Check out the new Farmward Bound Program through UVM!

Workshops:  We plan to offer several short workshops again this season, on topics such as SPIN farming and small hand tools.  This project is funded partly through a business plan implementation grant from the VT Farm Viability Program, based at the VT Housing & Conservation Board, with funding from the John Merck Fund and other private foundations. Learn more from the VHCB website.

Our first planned workshop for 2010 will be on the use of the scythe, Saturday May 15.  Check out the printable announcement here.

School groups:  We've had wonderful visits from students at Charlotte Central School and Champlain Valley Union High School.  We encourage students, educators, administrators, and parents to get in touch to schedule a visit.

Work and learn:  CSA members, friends, family, students, and any other aspiring growers are welcome to come and help out on the farm, to gain hand-in-the-dirt experience.  CSA members will receive updates of any workday events through our newsletter.

And other opportunities for all ages can be arranged.  Please contact us soon for this coming season!
